Throughout the 1990s hip hop music went through a large commercialization of its record labels and not only did artists bring their hip hop samples to well established music labels but some independent labels became quite well known during the decade and turned into large labels in their own right. There have been a few small, independent labels to have come out of the commercialization of the hip hop genre such as Rawkus Records which was responsible for working with Mos Def during some of his most successful releases. Underground artists found a lot of success with rival Def Jux.
